The 2020 Kansas City Chiefs Schedule Preview

So I did one of these for the Raiders, and it got me thinking. Why not do picks? Why not do way-too-early week one predictions? I got started, and before ya knew it, I had a spreadsheet with all 32 schedules marked out. I started coding the teams green and red for wins and losses, and I realized it would be significantly easier to just publish a schedule prediction for each of the 32 NFL teams.

Here’s my take on the 2020 Kansas City Chiefs.

The 2020 Kansas City Chiefs Schedule Preview

Week One: vs. Houston Texans

Predicted Winner: Kansas City Chiefs

I wanted to pick the Texans here. I’m a big fan of Deshaun Watson, and I think the Texans are going to be competitive in the AFC this year.

But… the Chiefs are the defending Super Bowl champions, at home, and last I checked, Patrick Mahomes is still there. It’s a W.

Confidence in Pick: 65%

Week Two: @ Los Angeles Chargers

Predicted Winner: Kansas City Chiefs

I’m not a huge fan of Justin Herbert, and as a result, I don’t think the Chargers are going to be very competitive this year. A fresh Chiefs team beats an inexperienced Chargers team 9 times out of 10.

The best thing about this game, is that it doesn’t matter if COVID prevents fans from attending, the same number of Chargers fans will be there.

Confidence in Pick: 75%

Week Three: @ Baltimore Ravens

Predicted Winner: Baltimore Ravens

This is a bit of a shot in the dark, but I think the Ravens are going to be dangerous this year. They got better on defense and fleshed out the offense. Lamar Jackson’s had an entire off-season of hearing about how he can’t win big games, and a very big game comes to M&T Bank stadium.

Confidence in Pick: 50%

Week Four: vs. New England Patriots

Predicted Winner: Kansas City Chiefs

I think the Chiefs would’ve spanked the Patriots even if Tom Brady hadn’t left. This is one of the least threatening offenses in football, and I think the Chiefs win by 20.

Confidence in Pick: 80%

Week Five: vs. Las Vegas Raiders

Predicted Winner: Kansas City Chiefs

As a Raiders fan, this hurts. But I just don’t think the Raiders have the talent on defense to keep Mahomes and company in check. Plus, Derek Carr can’t win in arrowhead. Chiefs roll.

Confidence in Pick: 80%

Week Six: @ Buffalo Bills

Predicted Winner: Kansas City Chiefs

I don’t really buy the Buffalo Bills. I don’t trust Josh Allen, and I don’t know that Stefon Diggs is going to make that big of a difference. I still think the Bills win the AFC East… but that’s more of an indictment on the league’s worst division than anything else.

Confidence in Pick: 80%

Week Seven: @ Denver Broncos

Predicted Winner: Kansas City Chiefs

I think the Denver Broncos have a lot of young potential on offense, but that defense? Is nowhere near good enough to keep up with the Chiefs. Denver would have to play a perfect game to win this one, and I wouldn’t bet on that.

Confidence in Pick: 70%

Week Eight: vs. New York Jets

Predicted Winner: Kansas City Chiefs

I honestly think the Jets might be the worst team in the NFL this year. It’s either them or Jacksonville. Either way, they’re not the kind of team that beats the defending Super Bowl champion.

Confidence in Pick: 90%

Week Nine: vs. Carolina Panthers

Predicted Winner: Kansas City Chiefs

I think the Panthers will be much improved this season. Teddy Bridgewater is a huge improvement over Kyle Allen, and I bet Christian McCaffrey keeps up his incredible pace from 2019.

However, I don’t think they’re quite ready to compete with a team like Kansas City, so the Chiefs win again.

Confidence in Pick: 60%

Week 10: Bye Week

Week 11: @ Las Vegas Raiders

Predicted Winner: Kansas City Chiefs

I just don’t think the Raiders have the kind of defense that can hang with Mahomes and the Chiefs. They’re young, inexperienced, and not on the same level as KC’s offense. Last year, the Chiefs scored four touchdowns in a single quarter. I don’t know if it’ll be that easy for the Chiefs to win, but I still expect them to add to the win column.

Confidence in Pick: 80%

Week 12: @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Predicted Winner: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

This is a big reach, but one I believe. The Buccaneers are fully loaded this year, and their potential seems limitless. If this game were in Kansas City, I’d probably pick the Chiefs. In Tampa? I’m taking a risk.

Confidence in Pick: 40%

Week 13: vs. Denver Broncos

Predicted Winner: Kansas City Chiefs

As I said before, I don’t think Denver’s offense is ready for this kind of match-up, and their defense isn’t up for this game. Chiefs complete the sweep.

Confidence in Pick: 85%

Week 14: @ Miami Dolphins

Predicted Winner: Kansas City Chiefs

The Dolphins added a ton of new pieces this year, including a franchise quarterback, but they’re not ready to compete with the AFC’s elite teams. Another win for Kansas City.

Confidence in Pick: 85%

Week 15: @ New Orleans Saints

Predicted Winner: Kansas City Chiefs

This should be a good game, especially in the Super Dome. It could really go either way, but until New Orleans resolves their running games issues, I think the Chiefs are the more complete team.

Confidence in Pick: 50%

Week 16: vs. Atlanta Falcons

Predicted Winner: Kansas City Chiefs

The Falcons are going to beat a few bad teams with pure firepower alone, but the Chiefs are not one of them. Their defense is still full of holes, and I don’t know that they’ll be able to keep up with Kansas City’s offense.

Confidence in Pick: 60%

Week 17: vs. Los Angeles Chargers

Predicted Winner: Kansas City Chiefs

With two losses, I don’t think the Chiefs will be able to comfortable sit back and rest in week 17. There’s still a very real chance they could get the number one seed, so they’ll have to host the Chargers at home, coming away with their 14th win.

Confidence in Pick: 65%

So I’ve got the Chiefs going 14-2, maintaining their stranglehold on the AFC West, and putting themselves in prime position to defend their Super Bowl Championship. If things go the way I think they will, there’s a very real chance Mahomes is a MVP candidate and big red has a chance at establishing the makings of a dynasty.
